Introduction

This one-day course will impart the necessary knowledge and skills for technical report writing skills. The course is structured such that participants will learn to look out for an appropriate style, tone and format of writing, express their points coherently, and consistently produce sharp, focused and concise written work. They will also pick up skills to vet common writing errors and to convincingly share these ideas with their peers. At the same time, participants will be able to understand the characteristics of proposals and ensure that their writing is suitable for the format.

Module 1: The Fundamentals of Effective Technical Proposal Writing

  • What is technical writing?
  • What is a proposal?
  • The fundamentals of good technical writing.
  • A few useful rules of punctuation, grammar, abbreviation, and capitalisation.

Module 2: Principles of Technical Communication

  • The approaches to writing—voice, direct and indirect.
  • Words and phrases commonly used in technical writing.

Module 3: Tone in Writing

  • Using appropriate words and phrases to improve tone in writing.
  • Keeping ideas as a statement of fact instead of personalising them.
  • Focusing on the solution instead of the problem.

Module 4: Review Proposal Samples

  • Applications of proofreading and vetting techniques. 
  • Identifying the pros and cons of the proposal.
  • Understanding what the characteristics are between proofreading and vetting.

Module 5: Proposal Writing Tools and Techniques

  • Identifying the proposal writing structure and organisation. 
  • How to do systematic planning (formal and informal templates) such as 4P’s, AIDA, IMPACT in the writing process.
  • How to enhance the proposal by using graphic representation such as tables, graphs, pie charts, etc.

Programme Trainer

Caroline Josephine Dawson holds a Master of Arts degree in Mass Communications from the Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. She has more than 8 years of invaluable experience in teaching business, environmental and technical communication and 10 years in the field of journalism and publishing. Caroline has trained operational, supervisory and managerial staff from various organisations.

As an Editor of 4 publications, i.e. Executive Inc, The Hemispheres, The Hemispheres Kid and Koolkidz Magazine, Caroline is presented with opportunities to conduct all facets of written communication to not only the corporate sector but students and aspiring writers as well. Caroline has also written several articles which have all been published in established local magazines. Her dissertation “Effective Ways of Promoting Environmental Consciousness among School Children in Singapore” is kept in Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and various nature organisations in Singapore as resource and reference material on environmental and persuasive communication.

Besides, her professional work experience as a Corporate Trainer has required her to market the value of her programs and persuade clients to value and understand the urgency of good communication skills in the workforce. She has also worked with the Workforce Development Agency of Singapore to develop training content for the Employability Skills System where she successfully attained industry-approved competencies in conducting, planning and designing competency-based assessments for workshops.
